Another new area that a marketing speaker may talk about is that of Search Engine Marketing or SEM. This is a method of advertising that takes place on search engines such as Google or Bing. It is a great way for a company to increase their brand recognition and to drive traffic to their website. It follows two models, a cost per click (CPC) model or a cost per 1000 exposures (CPM) model. CPC advertisements can be very cost effective. Payment for the ad is only made if someone clicks on it and depending on the keywords chosen and the competition for those keywords in the geographical areas chosen, it may only cost pennies per click.

Search engine optimization (SEM) is another area that may be covered. It is a method of designing your website so that it will show up in the top results of an organic web search. This means that when someone searches Google or another engine, the website will show up in their search results close to the top of the first page without having to pay for exposure. Some ways to do so are to use certain key words to improve your relevance rating or to be linked to from other websites.

A company's web design itself may be another topic of speaking. The marketer may talk about how this site should be the hub of a company's communication effort and not read like a print brochure. It is important for companies to offer something on their website that the consumer who does not want to buy something immediately can find useful.

Word of mouth (WOM) is another popular topic to speak on. It is said that WOM is one of the most powerful ways information about your business is spread. The internet makes it easy for people to spread the word of what a company is doing and so this topic will likely be tied into one of the previously mentioned topics on online marketing.

The internet is not the only outlet that should be covered. The old school methods are still very valid. The marketer will likely speak on the place that print advertising has in industry as well. Newspaper ads are still very effective when trying to reach certain types of consumers. Magazines are another form that have niche subscribers that companies want to reach.

Depending on the venue and the purpose of the speech, many of these or other topics are likely to be covered by marketing speakers. There are so many ways to reach consumers that it would takes months to talk about it all.
