The Art Of Public Speaking

By Karen McFarland

Only a few can truly say that they feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience. However, there are some things that can help you speak with confidence in public.

Keep your eyes on the public at all times.

Calm yourself. You know now by heart what you intend to say. Just do it.

If you can, use visual aids. Illustrations or visual data can help drive home a point or better explain what you are trying to convey. They will understand the gist of your speech. Keep your visual aids simple. If, for example, you don't have the visual, then just remember to use words that would describe succinctly your point.

Why not give handouts to the audience? This would serve as their copy of your speech or at least the points you are tackling. They will be appreciative of your effort to make things easier for everybody. The handout must contain the main gist of your speech in clear and simple terms. Too many words and technical research could turn people off.

Psyche yourself to look forward to your speech as an opportunity to showcase your talent, and not an ordeal that should be done away with soonest.

Improving your speech unity and coherence would help your listeners understand your points and would help you be more confident in nailing down that speech. In preparing your speech, write down your premises and arrange them in an orderly manner. So, for example, you are speaking in favor of stem cell research, enumerate your reasons why it is so, and close your speech with a conclusion.

It will be a bad thing if you are making a speech like a robot so vary the inflection especially when stressing a point. A well timed gesture now and then will help. If you are emphasizing a point, slow down emphatically. You can be a more persuasive and convincing speaker if you manifest hints of anger or frustration or similar emotional outbursts in your speech.

Get hold of books that give instructions and lessons about speaking in public. There are books that are dedicated to confidence building among public speakers that you ought to find very useful. For a more comprehensive discussion of the art of speaking in public, look for websites where you can get audio and visual lessons.

Some people who started as shaky and nervous speakers eventually find out that they have the gift and actually savor the opportunity of speaking in front of a large audience. Once you have learned to enjoy your presentations or even a part of these presentations, your confidence in yourself will greatly increase.
