Suggestions for understanding: Do you desire a Coach, or have to have a Mentor?
As an individual which has spoken before 1000's of men and women around the globe, as a Personal Development Mentor, translated into 18 languages, I delight in moving people into action. Before I answer that, let me go back and give you some history that will give you an insight into my answer I share with them. My Dad is my best teacher, and growing up I learned the fine art of "Experience is the best Teacher"! Do you remember as a child how you "thought" you had been "getting away" with things, only to be busted by your parents? Well I would get busted and it was usually my Dad. I can tell you on numerous occasions I messed up only to do that slow look around that you do when you mess up and discover Dad standing somewhere giving me a stare. Now I've to let you know, it wasn't "the look", your in trouble it was more like, "okay, now what's your next step" look of encouragement.
So what does this have to do with how to choose a Coach vs a mentor? Here ya go... My Dad didn't do it for me, many occasions he didn't even show me how to complete the task properly. I would to get so mad, I used to think he did not believe it was crucial to show me. What I have learned now as an adult, is the fact that he was forcing me to Think, to generate a plan in my head, teaching me to think in advance, if this then that, type of thinking. Back then this pattern between me and my Dad, it triggered challenges and I've to let you know I got mad on quite a few occasions.
So here are my thoughts on the best way to pick a Coach and how to pick a Mentor.
Coach
1. Define what skill you want to improve.
2. Locate a person that performs the skill you seek, and hire them.
3. Follow the routine they put you on.
4. Determine how long you desire to be taught this new skill.
Mentor
1. Who is an individual that has the qualities of a person you admire?
2. Someone that has the ability to move people into action.
3. What set of skills would you wish to have tremendous good results in?
4. Who's prove in those topics you desire and have they mentored men and women previously?
5. Are you prepared to get a lifetime relationship and can you see yourself doing that?
A Coach will show you tips on how to do what you wish to do, a Mentor will teach you the best way to do things you did not know you were capable of! So you must figure out which do you would like? How do you discover if a person is the appropriate selection for you? You must share your concerns, you need to interview, you have to make a list of factors you are seeking.
So how do you interview? Interviewing is a process of finding out if will you get the value needed to invest in the relationship. So you have to be honest about what you are looking for. If the person you are talking to has the experience you are looking for, you'll know it from the conversation. They will share insights with you that they pick up from the interview conversation with you, they will give you action steps to put into action even if you choose not to use them for your personal training.
A Mentor is a person that can move you into action and hold you accountable, bring out the good results in you that you simply have kept hidden for far too long. A lot like I mentioned earlier, when I believed I was getting away with different things as a kid, my Dad knew. A mentor is the same way, they know when you are carrying out what they asked you to do and when you're not.
So make your list, determine if are you looking for a coach or a mentor. Here is the good news. A Mentor can be a coach, but a coach can't always be a mentor. You have to determine how hard you want to be pushed and are you willing to pay the price. My answer to those that want me to mentor them is "Yes, now your first task is to send me your list of 20 goals that you want out of life." As soon as I get them, I will begin the process with them. We will schedule their Mental Profits Call. It's sad really, out of the 100's that have had the courage to ask, only a handful have taken action, and that action has turned into great success for them.
So here are a few things for you to ask yourself:
1. In your current state of being, are you happy with what you've got?
2. If your growth this year is much like last year's are you satisfied?
3. Do you may have a customized road map developed for your talents?
4. Will you hold yourself accountable to succeed?
5. Does the believed of tremendous achievement scare the hell out you?
For those who answered Yes to any of these, you may be in search of a coach.
If you answered No to all of them, well it's my guess you should find a Mentor, and start today. I wish you great success.
