Public Speaking For Starters - The Basics

By Jewel Chesson

The content of a speech should match the information needed by the audience. Carefully and specifically prepare the material in order to ensure success on your public speaking endeavor. Recording your speech then carefully listening to it will be a lot of help. Do this in front of the mirror. You will be able to know which are the weaknesses of your speech as well as the strong points of your speech.

Below are the most important things to take note of when invited to do a public speech.

Delivering a speech is like performing as an actor on stage. Choose an attire which is appropriate for the occasion. You should be serious if the topic is serious. The topic that is being presented should be reflected by the image. But keep in mind that being boring at all is not what this means. You need to protect yourself as an enthusiastic, lively, and confident speaker despite the seriousness of the topic.

Ever heard of the saying the eyes are the windows to a person's soul? Making eye contact is a must when you are giving the speech presentation. But don't just stick to only one person in the room. When you look at the people, think of them as if they've been long time friends and acquaintance. The opening statements should be really catchy. By doing this, you can get the attention of the audience. A good eye opener of the speaker's words would definitely get their minds into participating during the talk since these people have a lot of things going on in their minds prior to hearing the speech presentation. An icebreaker will help; write the topic on a board and ask the audience what things they would want to hear about the topic. Never missing a good joke is another thing to remember.

Make a pause. By doing this, the speaker and the listeners will be allowed to reflect and absorb everything that has been said. It would be a good idea not to look like someone who is already out of air.

To enhance presentations, use audio-visual materials. There should be plan A and B, so if the first plan does not work, you have an alternative to fall upon.

It's important to keep track of the time so that you can avoid boring the audience. Since there could be other speakers and listeners that have other appointments, never go beyond the time that's been allotted to you.

Provide a main point of what has been discussed at the end.

There are questions you won't be able to answer but this shouldn't worry you. Remember, it is extremely important to do some research before you deliver that speech.

Enjoy the whole experience. If the speaker is feeling any discomfort at the moment, then the audience will be able to feel this. The image projected is often remembered more than the topic discussed anyway.
