Public Speaking Tips - How To Overcome Your Nervous

By Dana McLean

Even if the speech you are going to deliver is already prepared and you know everything about it, public speaking can be difficult. When they speak in public, many people are very nervous. Here are some tips for you to overcome your nervous feelings when you speak in front of many people.

Prepare your presentation

You need to center on yourself. You can practice standing properly with your feet directly under the hips. For speaking in public, this position is the best and the most stable. You can rehearse this position in front of your mirror or with somebody.

Make sure that your shoulders are relaxed. Supporting your larynx directly are the muscles in the shoulders in order to have a fast effect on your voice. Roll out the shoulders as well.

Warm up your voice. You should treat all your presentations as if they were performances. Rehearse in order to prepare yourself. Try to deeply breathe into the bottom part of the lungs. You feel your rib cage is expanding slightly higher than the navel. The next thing you should do is thrice sigh. By sighing, you are telling your body that it is perfect to relax and that everything is okay. Then make a siren sound, starting from a high note to a lower note at the bottom part of the voice range you have. You will be able to find the low note connecting to the place located right above the navel if you have enough practice. This voice pitch is the natural one that you have.

How to manage meeting skills

Direct your voice. Every time you speak, imagine that each word you say is like a beam of laser traveling from your mouth to the end person listening to you. If you practice this outlook, then you will be able to reach many people at the same time.

Directing your thoughts. Try to pay attention to your thoughts especially their beginnings and endings. Are you sure your communication is complete and fully rounded?

Besides diction, you should also consider articulation. Clearly convey your message.

What happens during questions

Give yourself time and space in breathing.

Before answering, slightly breathe out first. You usually take in more additional air than you need when you are flustered or nervous and while you try to think, you hold on to that air. But this will not help you. This method will usually cause you to panic. Breathe air first before you speak in order to remove this habit and to allow you to relax and thoughts to come in more logically and clearly.
