A Sample Wedding Speech For The Future

By Amelia Peck

Any sample wedding speech cannot serve for every circumstance because cultural and social circumstances differ so widely from one situation to another. However, there are some factors that may be true for most situations. Weddings are after all celebrations and usually thanks is due to many people.

What follows might be regarded as a sample of a speech given at a wedding far into the future. It is given by a man, though it could be delivered by a person of either gender. It is much shorter than it would be in reality, even though most people will have been educated into speaking in tweets by the time of the speech.

Guests, friends and now officially, family. Thanks you all for sharing this special occasion with us. As most of you know, we have been living together with our two children, for ten years now. Our wedding ceremony is somewhat belated, but no less special for that.

By entering into a legal contract beyond the moral and emotional bonds that have bound us for some years we wish to signify a respect for and compliance with the ancient traditions of our society and the civilization of which we are part. Thank you all for coming to witness and share the day with us.

I am no longer Jean's partner, but her husband, and she is my wife. Being husband and wife means more to us than being partners. As partners we co-operated but retained our independence. As husband and wife we have given to each other the ultimate that we have to give, our independence. We have done that reciprocally, knowing full well what it means, and happy to do it. This is our cause for celebration.

No wedding speech can be complete without thanks to people who have been especially important in helping to make the day a special one for us. In particular we wish to thank our parents on both sides for being supportive and for stepping in to help financially though we have procrastinated for so long! And then there is my Grandmother, the sole representative of the previous generation. You are a special person here today Grandma. We hope you will enjoy the celebration and that it will show you how the more things change, the more they stay the same.
